Is home schooling really THAT bad?

I don%26#039;t think so.. I HATED my school. I went to public school in LA County from elementary to junior high. It was terrible. Teens got pregnant left and right, several young people were stabbed or shot right in front of the school, most teachers didn%26#039;t give a dang what the students did, much less learned... and this was a high school in a more affluent part of the city, NOT somewhere impoverished or with a high crime rate. People would get beaten up every single day, and there were actual police on campus 24/7. A lot of people ended up dropping out, including myself. Now, I did get back on track, but some people don%26#039;t. A lot of the time, high school is the opposite of a nurturing environment, which is important when you%26#039;re so young. If I could have had a choice, I would have done home schooling, no doubt. I know it%26#039;s not right for every person, but some people are against home schooling for basically all kids. What%26#039;s with the stigma attached to home schooling?

Is home schooling really THAT bad?

Nope, it%26#039;s not bad at all - it%26#039;s just not the status quo, which makes people doubt it.

Back 20-30 years ago, homeschooling was illegal in many parts of the country and many hs families went %26quot;underground%26quot; - they went nowhere between the hours of 8 and 3, and their kids weren%26#039;t allowed to participate in many activities because they didn%26#039;t go to public school. This is where the %26quot;socialization%26quot; fallacy comes in...for some reason, many people haven%26#039;t figured out that it%26#039;s no longer 1978.

Now, homeschooling (or registering your home as a private school) is legal in all 50 states, and students are able to study a myriad of subjects at their individual level, in the way that makes sense to them. Rather than having to make due with public school castoff textbooks, there are literally hundreds of curriculum choices open to homescholers. There are community and co op classes, sports/art/music lessons, theater groups, play days, game nights, even proms and graduation ceremonies open to homeschool kids. Many are able to enter college at 15 or 16 (or younger) and get a jump on their future careers.

I used to live in So Cal (Orange County) and there is no way I would send my son to the public schools where we lived. I worked in a high-stress job 45 minutes away so that I could afford to send him to a high-priced private school. It was an excellent school (it should have been for $11-1200 per month), and he got a great education there - one which we have continued through homeschooling.

We now live in the midwest, and while our schools aren%26#039;t *as* violent, there are still shootings, drug busts, and police roaming the halls. Our district - also one of the most affluent - has a 20-30% dropout rate annually.

The stigma that gets attached to homeschooling is because of ignorance, pure and simple. It%26#039;s either a product of %26quot;my brother%26#039;s girlfriend%26#039;s cousin%26#039;s daughter%26#039;s neighbor homeschooled her kid, and he was a loner%26quot; or %26quot;2 kids in our school came back from homeschooling last year, and they were behind%26quot;. Gee, could it be that the kid is just introverted, and that the kids came back from homeschooling because it wasn%26#039;t working for them for whatever reason?

Congrats for getting things back on track - that%26#039;s not easy to do, especially in the midst of a lot of people who don%26#039;t. Homeschooling isn%26#039;t right for everyone - no one educational option is - but it is right for the 2 million+ kids that are homeschooled.

Is home schooling really THAT bad?

i did home schooling for a year, but it wasnt my choice it was cus i got kicked out, i actually did really well academically but school is a great place to socialize and make friends so that part wasnt so good.

Is home schooling really THAT bad?

One of my closer friends was home schooled her whole life until high school. I go to a private school, which i love. the downside is that many people are rich and a little close minded (not everyone, i have the best friends). i like a little diversity though. But as far as academics, I%26#039;m in all honors/AP classes and its great.

Is home schooling really THAT bad?

i am schooled through public school and a graduate with a 3.4GPA but i was one of the bad boys of a high school of 1100 students and well known for it.... as for home schooling i do believe that there are good and bad points as there is w/everything in life.... the good point is the one on one interaction with the educator and the way knowledge is absorbed.... bad point is social knowledge and the interaction of how society is created, you have only pointed out the bad of public school, ask yourself what was the good points .... but in the end home schooling has a better advantage in knowledge although to continue into education such as college is a new experience unlike public school because these people are trying to better there lifes.... good luck and always have a open mind when decisions are made
