What steps have been effective in reducing gang activity in schools?

It's one thing to know what causes gangs to develop, but it seems a lot more difficult to find out how to eradicate them once they%26#039;ve started. Communities refuse to give evidence, in fear for their family%26#039;s safety. I heard of one case of a gang member killing his own wife to prevent her from giving evidence against someone.

School would seem a good place to break the cycle for the next generation. But currently, gangs seem as active in schools as anywhere else. I was chatting to some new teachers, and they were telling me that schools in a certain region are rated between 1 and 5 based on gang activity (1 being low; 5 being shooting across the playground at each other). It%26#039;s so frustrating watching children being sucked in.

What can municipalities, police, teachers, parents and the community do to reduce gang activity in schools? (please cite references if you have any)

Decreasing gang activity is a community effort. You have to get the community to gain courage to fight against these gangs. Only then will you decrease the amount of gangs in the schools.
