Why are some of the best rated movies so BORING?

Im taking a movie class right now in college and I decided to rent a few movies off of my teachers list of the top 200 movies of all time. Our teacher told us this week that one of the greatest directors was Stanley Kubrick so I decided to rent two of his most famous movies: Dr Strangelove and 2001: A Space Oddysey. Well I actually got through Dr Strangelove although I was almost bored to tears and exremely confused during the entire movie. Then I put in 2001: A Space Oddysey and I just had to shut it off about and hour of the way through. It was so incredibly boring and I just could not stand it. Yet critics say these are two of the best movies of all time! I just don%26#039;t understand it. It%26#039;s not that I am not %26quot;cultured%26quot;, I love classical music and all types of art. Yet these movies just bored me to death and i have no idea what all the hype is about.

From a historical perspective consider that 2001: A Space Odyssey was finished in 1967-1968. Just consider the special effects and compare them with other movies of the time. They were amazing. It took Kubrick years to make the movie and he went overbudget time and again. The movie was based on a book by Arthur C. Clarke that is actually part of a series including 2010 and 2067. Just remember that we didn%26#039;t land on the moon until 1969. If you recall in the movie we had already established a base on the moon just 33 years in the future (1968 to 2001). There was a space station(s) oribiting the earth and a flight to the space station from earth was essentially a commercially available flight. Watch it again and look at the resemblance of the craft that flies to the space station and the space shuttle in use today. This movie was significant because it was a vision of the future. It was made in a time of optimism about the future as humanity was reaching for the stars in a literal sense. Look at how short we%26#039;ve fallen when you compare where we are now with regard to space exploration and where we were in the movie. The monolith represents an alien presence and it was present in pivotal moments in the history of humanity. The opening sequence showed when proto-humans discover that a bone can become a tool and a tool becomes a weapon. This leads to the consumption of higher protein amounts in the diet which lead to a relatively rapid growth in brain size over time which leads to consciousness or a realization of one%26#039;s own existence. I could clearly go on and on but I don%26#039;t wanna bore you. :-) The monolith was present again on the moon buried so deeply. How did it get there? Was it placed there because the aliens knew we would find it at such a pivotal time when our first deep space mission was approaching Jupiter which some astrophyscists believe was a failed sun that never formed to completion and that our solar system would be a binary one? The computer HAL has achieved artificial intelligence and develops consciousness. Where is our computer science today with respect to the movie? There are so many themes in this movie that you should look at more closely. I realize that it is a little slow. I%26#039;ll admit that but it%26#039;s akin to reading an important book that may not completely %26quot;grab%26quot; you...it%26#039;s still a worthwhile thing to do.

Dr. Strangelove was a satire about nuclear war. The general has %26quot;alien hand syndrome%26quot;, which is a real neurological condition by the way, but it represents the notion that the left hand knows not what the right hand does which is so true in our government. It was also made at a time when the paranoia of the Cold War was so high that we feared a Russian spy under every bed and hundreds, if not, thousands of nuclear missiles and bombs trained on every city in our country. What has become of all these munitions? If you think they%26#039;ve just gone away, you%26#039;re sadly mistaken... This movie was significant because of the social commentary it made. Check out Full Metal Jacket and A Clockwork Orange. Look at A Clockwork Orange and think about the level of violence in our society today. Art isn%26#039;t always exciting but that does not mean that it isn%26#039;t important.

Why are some of the best rated movies so BORING?

Because the people who choose the ratings don%26#039;t know how to rate properly

Why are some of the best rated movies so BORING?

boring people rate them

Why are some of the best rated movies so BORING?

movies that i think are boring but got great review are:

american beauty

lost in translation

i didnt get they hype! theres alot of movies i cant sit through. theres too much talking.

Yeah, who are the critics? Just ask me I know a good movie when I see 1.

Why are some of the best rated movies so BORING?

I learned that, just because a movie%26#039;s highly critically-acclaimed doesn%26#039;t mean that it%26#039;s one of the greatest films ever in history. Have you noticed how critics bash films on yahoo movie reviews? Many films they bash turn out to be not mediocre at all. The bottomline is we should watch whatever floats our boat. Different strokes for different folks.

trying to get into kubrick as a rookie is a sure way to sour yourself. its like learning to drive for the first time in a porsche. some of the themes he was working on are still ahead of their time. try something like woody allen or do the right thing, movies that are exactly what they are trying to be and not something that you have to decipher, until you learn the film language.

i liked dr strangelove and 2001: a space oddesy, but i hated the departed from martin scorcse, (think that%26#039;s how it%26#039;s spelt), even though goodfellas is one of my favorite films.

Why are some of the best rated movies so BORING?

because they are different from mainstream cookie cutter movies

I fell asleep in the theatre watching A Space Oddysey

My generation gap is going to show so here goes: the movies of the last 20-25 years have been, on the whole, so unimaginative and profit-driven that as long as it has explosions and plenty of violence, it%26#039;s gonna sell. Most young movie goers today want everything laid out in front of them, more visual then substantive. I know plenty of people will say I%26#039;m generalizing, but there you go. When movies like these two were made, and I%26#039;m not saying they%26#039;re the greatest (my wife can%26#039;t stand them), dialogue and characters meant everything. 2001: A Space Odyssey was one of the first films to challenge that, making it more of a visual experience than most films of the time.
